Clayton County Water Authority Complying with Federal Identity Theft Red Flag Rule To Protect Customer Accounts

The Federal Trade Commission is requiring water utilities like the Clayton County Water Authority (CCWA) to comply with its Red Flag Rule by May 1, 2009. In response to this federally mandated program, the CCWA is required to implement a written Identity Theft Prevention Program. As part of this new federal mandate, CCWA must verify a customer’s social security number when a new account is established or service is transferred to a new location. This new requirement begins on Wednesday, April 1, 2009.

For new Clayton County Water Authority customers with two names on their lease or settlement statement, both social security numbers will be required for new service. One person can come in to start service, but they will have to provide ID and social security numbers for both parties.

International customers will need to provide a valid ITIN, plus two other forms of documentation (such as a valid passport, valid international driver's license or valid work visa).

If you have a question about the Red Flag Rule, contact the Federal Trade Commission at RedFlags@ftc.gov.

Residential or Commercial customers must complete the Clayton County Water Authority's New Service Packet by printing, completing, signing and returning the Application for Service and Service Agreement with picture identification.
